A Real Paladin Tank Weapon

I would like to see +dmg and +defense/dodge/or parry weapons added to the game. Why is it that there are so many nice weapons for Warrior tanks but we have to fight over +dmg weapons that all casters want as well?

Lets see...King's Defender in Karazhan, The Sun Eater from TK Heroic... the list goes on and on..

Gonna try to make the 'raid tank first' argument with me? Check my gear before you try :) I'm tanking 25-mans (Gruul, Mag, TK and SSC) as well as 10-mans (Kz).


I've seen many protection paladins who believe there is a set amount of spell damage that you should have for each tier of PvE raid dungeons. The fact of the matter is, there is no set amount. It's completely contingent upon the dps capability of your raid. If your dps is low, you'll need less spell damage to maintain threat. If you're not having problems holding aggro in tempest keep sporting 150 base spell damage then your dps is very undergeared, or you are limiting their dps output by making their damage limited by the threat you're capable of generating.

Option three is that you got secrets and skills that we all aspire to achieve.

Do nudge upstairs every once in awhile will ya. We've gotten really great boosts post-BC but there are still problems outstanding that result in us being relegated in favor of our Warrior and Druid brethren.


I don't see anything too glaring yet, but there are some slight improvements I would like to see at some point in the future. In example, I'd like my avenger shield to have a much faster cast time so I can use it in combat for extra threat as needed.

And honestly, I love my protection paladin.

I've been off-tank, main-tank, healer, add-duty, etc...

Depends on where we're at, what we're fighting, and our current raid roster.

Good call. A lower casting time would mean an extra attack in our armory. As it is I do try to utilize avenger's shield as an extra attack during a boss fight every once in awhile. The problem with that, however, is the loss in casting time when one is pounded on by a mob. Factor in critical cooldowns such as holy shield and it means that I rarely use the ability when I absolutely need holy shield up.


Well the larger probem is you can't block or parry when casting, so mitigation goes way down, and if fighting a raid boss, you're probably going to be very crushable.

But, in general we're in agreement.

The spell hit mostly. Spell hit only effects JoR, Holy shield, and the first tick of consecration, making it significantly less useful than spell damage for threat.

And now that our taunt works on melee hit (great change btw) spell hit has very little effective use.


Spell hit should not be a priority stat, however, it should also not be underestimated, imho. Also, was looking at your talents just now. A way you could compensate is to grab the 2.4 heroic items, and drop one point from precision, placing it then in improved judgement, which should end up in a nice threat boost. You'll likely end up with a nice overall increase to threat generation.
