What makes the the Lich King so powerful?

Excuse my ignorance, i am a lore person, but i never understood this. How is he so powerful? Why would kiljaedon make a "tool" that powerful.

I mean, people make him out to be when i see a lich king vs anonymous thread, "Oh lich king wins."

Please, someone explain.
