Why every Tuesday?

I enjoy playing WoW but often find that I cannot because of it being down every Tuesday. I often don't have the time or chance to play on the weekends, so I look forward to weekday or even morning WoW time with my coffee :) I also live in the EST time zone, so I usually can't log on until 12pm or 1pm on Tuesdays, which is about the same time I am already busy working.

Why oh why does Blizzard need maintenance time that lasts at least (usually more than) 4 hours, once a week? If its just a matter of restarting the servers, why does it take that much time? If its more than just a matter of restarts, then why do we need fixes to bugs, interface changes, event changes and such? Is it that hard to keep the game up and running? Honestly, 4 or more hours a week is quite a bit of time and to have to fix things three to four times in a months period says something about the game's stability.

Please, again please make the WoW gaming experience a little more like.. a true gaming experience... I pay nearly 15 bucks a month to sit and wait for a total of roughly 16 hours a month? Why?!

Round and round we go.

Q u o t e:
Why?!

I can understand your concern, Kaeler; and I appreciate the cogent manner in which you've presented it this morning. I'm an avid player, as well, and I know how distraught I have become in past months when the game was unavailable due to scheduled or unexpected downtime, particularly when my freetime was incredibly limited. I can empathize and sympathize; however, I can also realize the necessity of these maintenances.

Consider World of Warcraft a machine, if you will: it consists of multiple parts, and, in order for it to function properly, all the parts must be working correctly and in sync with one another. To keep this so-called mechanic harmony, these parts must be tended to, often on a weekly basis. We cannot simply ignore the condition of these individual parts lest we resign ourselves to simply fixing mistakes when they occur instead of preventing their occurrence entirely.

Weekly maintenances benefit the game as a whole, friend. While the downtime may be a bit of an inconvenience, it is a necessary side-effect of a necessary process. On this note, I would like to mention that we are seeking ways to keep realms live during maintenance times, and have implemented rolling restarts in past weeks to accomplish this; regrettably, this system is not yet perfected nor can all forms of maintenances occur while players are online--for this, I do apologize.

How can you sit there and say that you (Blizzard) didn't know adding/doing more stuff to your realms was not going to take more time?

Because then we would be fortune tellers, Gubini, and not members of the gaming industry.

Unfortunately, we cannot always predict what may or may not occur during scheduled maintenances. We try to provide an accurate, though approximate time frame for our players; however, unexpected events may arise which cause our systems to require further attention and, regrettably, further downtime. This is, of course, not something we want, particularly if you factor in customer satisfaction, though it is necessary for overall performance and stability.

"We are running processes on several realms which are taking longer than initially estimated"

How can you sit there and say that you(Blizzard) didn't know adding/doing more stuff to your realms was not going to take more time?

Gubini, you're asking specific questions about the way in which realm maintenance is performed of the Game Master department. Not only do we not meddle in the affairs of the Database Administrators when it comes to the work they do, your questions directed toward us will not in any way make the maintenance window decrease.

These threads come around every Tuesday, and while I can understand the frustration of downtime as well, I do not understand how people that know very little about the way in which our systems operate seem to feel their complaints about the process will somehow make this easier for everyone.

If you simply feel the need to pass the time by posting complaints here, just please keep it to this one thread. Thanks.

Maybe the "Database Administrators", should be responding to these posts with some answers and the complaining might stop.

Personally, I'd rather them work on making sure the realms are being brought back up, which is why they are not customer service representatives. If they took their time to answer every concern brought up here every Tuesday, I doubt the maintenance times would improve.

Q u o t e:
Why is this a solution?

- Because then we can have half of our characters on Tuesday servers, and half on Wednesday servers.

Unfortunately, the concurrency our realm set presently supports would overwhelm available servers should scheduled maintenance be split in twain, Evergreys; it's best address this matter holistically and contemporaneously, lest we wish to witness massive queue times, "raids" on live realms, and potential crashes due to instability.

Nevertheless, you're welcome to voice these opinions and thoughts on our Suggestions Forum. :)

I'd rather this thread expand in length than witness 17 new topics created. :)

Lord, Syndri, I'm personally much more comfortable leaving the walking dead IN game...don't let them cloud up the forum too!

Those threads listed within the CS Information Haven are meant to serve as bastions of insight and discussion, Mythryl. It would be somewhat counterproductive to lock this location, as I'm sure it would only birth five identical topics (or encourage their creation).

No, this thread—as with a plethora of those listed within the Haven—will remain open. Mind your brains. :)

Irony: Bumping an old topic only to inform another that bumping an old topic is a regrettable faux-pas.

Contribute constructively, folks, or just let additional comments be. :)
