How to pronounce...

So, there's a list of things in WoW that are REALLY hard to say. And several conflicts arise. However, I will not be talking about any of these.

How do you pronounce your name? It started when I looked at Vrak's name and was like... Vh-rhak-thiris? V-rak-thris? vrakthrz?

Bear-ghe? Burghe? Ka-yo-nee? Ka-yo-neh? So on and so forth.

etc.

So? How do you say your name?

Bahr-oh-lass.

I can only definitively speak for myself, but I believe I know how my associates prefer their names to be pronounced. They're welcome to contradict me, though, if I happen to botch one of their pronunciations -- we'll just have to keep this thread alive until they all come in, won't we? ;)

Auryk: AWR-ik. (It may be OHR-ik, though.)
Batta: BAW-taw. (Not BAH-tah, as I understand it.)
Berghe: Behrzh. (I still call him BURG, though. :P)
Kaone: kah-OHN. (Making "owned" comments easy.)
Pavonum: PAHV-oh-num. (Not pahv-OH-num.)
Syndri: SIN-dree. (It may be sin-DREE, however.)
Vrakthris: VRAK-thriss. (Pretty much phonetic.)

One of these days I may take the time to figure out how to represent them with the actual International Phonetic Alphabet, but this'll do for now. :D

This brings up an interesting question -- what actual sounds do you two attribute to "ah"? Phonetically, it's probably closest to the first sound in "apple," but you could intend for it to signify the sound in "awe." I distinguish between the two with "ah" being "apple" and "aw" being "awe."

Q u o t e:
Bahr-oh-lass.

Personally, I've always pronounced Barolas as "behr-oh-lass," where "behr" sounds like "bear," but your pronunciation (by my standards) makes it "bahr-oh-lass," where "bahr" sounds like "bah" with an "r" tacked on the end. Which pronunciation did you intend, out of curiosity? :)

Q u o t e:
Narath: Nah-RAHth

Likewise, is this "naw-rawth," where "aw" sounds like "awe," or is it "nehr-ahth," where "eh" is the first vowel in "pencil" and "ah" is like "apple"?

As for the intended pronunciation, Pav, you're the English Major here. ;)

That doesn't necessarily make me any more right in this area; it's your name, after all. :P

Q u o t e:
However, the way I've always thought of it was 'Bar' (think bar of soap) 'oh' (as in the short exclamation of surprise), and 'las' (as in a young lass or such).

Yes, that does make sense. I suppose it's just easier for me to say it my way, but it's good to know what you prefer. :)

Pav, you did a wonderful job in getting mine spot on! It is indeed Auryk: AWR-ik., I often find myself correcting coworkers when they pronounce it "OHR-ik".

Vythe: VAITH (The ai to be pronounced as in mine or by) But that is just how I pronounce it, so feel free to correct me.

That is, indeed, how Vythe's name is pronounced (to my knowledge). Thanks for pointing out that I'd forgotten him. :)

And then there's my Paladin Marbara... I don't know how to pronounce it, it was a Randomd name, help me!

Just looking at the name, it strikes me that it would be pronounced like "Marlboro" in a Southern drawl, i.e. MAHR-buh-ruh.

Q u o t e:
Do I get a present for pointing it out? And also, you might want to give Vythe formal apologies:P

You get my esteem, and I'm sure Vythe's appreciation. What more are you looking for, Silm? :P

He does, Silmarwen, but he has very fluffy fingers. I am very fond of my flies but they can come visit anytime you need some company.

Ugh SBTALOL spam..and it's not even Friday the 13th. :>/ Vrak, are you playing with the SBTALOL button again?!

It wasn't me!

Well, I don't think it was me.

I suppose it could have been me, but I'll never tell!

What does this big red button labeled Don't Push do anyway?

So you do call each other by your game names around the office!

Well, when I am referring to something Pav said on the forum, I tend to say, “Pav was talking to ….” But if he was to be saying something in person I would use his name, may sound a bit confusing, but it’s kinda like I distinguish each as a separate person.

Also, when a fellow Game Master is talking about us, they may not know our name, but may know our Avatars name, and thus refer to us by those names. :0)

WTB [How to Stay Upset Manual]

You could always just stick around and hang out with me, Silm, then there would be no need to have such a Manual.

All too often my dear; in fact, I was saddened by your recent disappearance. Then, saw you pop up in General, and was even more so... thought you were hiding from me. :0(

And that is 100% honest truth.
