How Often Do I Need To check My Crops?

There's nothing more frustrating than planting my crops, checking them again before I log for the night and then getting up the next morning and finding that some didn't grow because they somehow became smothered overnight.

After you plant a plant, stand there a few seconds and then mouse over the planet, and it will tell you what is wrong with it:

Infested: Use the Bug Sprayer
Parched: Use the Watering Can
Smothered: Pull the weed out
Tangled: Grab the vine and walk backwards
Wild: Right click it and jump on it to get rid of the tentacle
Wiggling: Right Click it and kill the virmen.
Alluring: Right click it and kill the hawk.
Runty: Right click it and jump.
