This hit me last night while in the beta...

I love the per battle system so far, it is a ton of fun. I have around 170 pets on this toon, and I'm excited about the account-wide sharing of pets and mounts (my DK has all of the luck in terms of low percentage drops from dungeons and holidays. But last night I made a mistake, I went to the Auction House.

For 2,000 gold I was able to purchase 2 uncommon and one common level 24 pets. It was just like Diablo 3. I rolled over the trainer quest lines (what is there after the one outside Booty Bay - it just ended, are the other dailies implemented yet?). I went searching for pets to tame, but everything just got squished.

So out to Outlands I went, and couldn't find anything. In Northrend, it seemed to be one per zone. Oh well, I took the stargate from Sholazar Basin to Un'Goro Crater and then flew down to Uldum. I had a lot of fun fighting the level 23-24 pets there. Picked up some strategy to use with my newly acquired AH pets and some of those from the zone, but I was left with that sinking feeling of I didn't belong there. It was cheapened now. I had 170 pets sitting at levels 1-5 that I wondered if I would level any of them for anything other than vanity.

I'm not sure - I'm trying to figure this out, but since it is so easy to simply purchase a pet in the upper 20's and then capture a wide spectrum of pets then, what's the point of the leveling process?

When this goes live, I'm forgetting completely about the auction house. But in light of some of threads on pet rarity, maybe scrapping rarity and creating a system where our current non-combat pets can only be opened up after we get another pet to a certain level. So, that rare Spirit of Competition pet is a level 15 pet, but I can't use him until I've level a pet up to that point, then it gets unlocked.

What do you think about the AH, and does it lessen the purpose of having all of these pets in the first place? Thanks!

We just finished a pass making all pets that are caught via pet battles in the world non-tradeable. This means these pets cannot be put in cages for trading or posting on the AH. We felt that the option to buy these pets on the AH would take away from the exploration/collection gameplay of the system.

This could always change in a future patch, but this is how it will go out with MoP. You should see the change in our next build.
