Unlearn talent cost

I just decided to unlearn my talents and it cost me a gold. The last time I reset my talents on a different character, it was free, but warned that I would be charged increasing amounts of gold.

My question is about how it works. I figured it would be based on each character, not my whole account, but the first character, Wilheim, was free and this character, Morkk, cost a gold.

I would like to know how this all works so I don't get up to paying hundreds of gold to redo my talents on some character.

Any insight would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.

(Had to dig this up...)

If you had a paladin prior to patch 1.9.0, you got a refund of all your talent points due to the drastic changes made to the tree. Not sure if your Wilhelm is that old (would have been January of 2006).

Other than that, the cost for the first time ever is 1g.

As listed in the 1.9.0 Patch Notes: (http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/patchnotes/patch1p9.html).

Paladins
• Due to significant talent changes, all Paladins' talent points will be refunded and can be respent. Training costs for all talent spell/ability replacements have been significantly reduced.

My best guess would be that your Human Paladin was around prior to this change, so the first time you went for a respec, it used this up, instead of charging you the initial one gold fee.
