That was when people PVP'd because it was fun. Not for gear, not for honor, but for the fact that you are running head first into 50+ horde with you 50 alliance buddies. SS and TM raids took place for days on end not because we where grinding for our new staff or dagger.
That was truly MMO pvp. There is nothing massive or epic about arenas. No one is going to write epic poems(lolrp) about kiting someone around a pillar. Why do you think so many people reminisce about these days?
