I received an e-mail, out of the blue.

"Your World of Warcraft account name registered to this Email address is (*******************). If you are still experiencing issues logging into your account, please call our Billing department at 1-800-59-BLIZZARD (800-592-5499) between 8:00am and 8:00pm Pacific Time, Mon-Fri."

I didn't request this and never had this happen before. Is someone trying to compromise my account?

It's just as likely that someone mistyped their email address while trying to get their own account info.

Particularly if you managed to snag a "popular" email address.

Although I don't know if it was a mistype or not, that e-mail is usually sent from the Account Name Retrieval Page, it is an automatic process.

Make sure your computer is secure, but otherwise you should be fine, those e-mails go to your registered address so unless someone else has access to it you shouldn't have a problem.

I was wondering if any of this is normal procedure for a account banning situation?

Nooooooo waaayyyyy.

Q u o t e:
We will never, ever, EVER, eva-eva, evAr, ever ask for your password. Never. No. Not ever. Should the survival of the human race rest upon our Support division knowing your account's password, we would still not ask for it. We would allow monkeys to usurp our supremacy and reclaim the earth as their own.

Your instinct was correct, Santyklaws. While some recovery processes do require the provision of identification, we will never ask for one's password. Or credit card. Or anything save normal Billing field entries. Go ahead and have your friend ship that email off to Hacks@blizzard.com. :)
