I downloaded a trial version of warcraft not long ago. I still have 2 days left.
Yesterday I bought a new retail version of the game. it was still sealed.

I go to enter the authentication key, and it tells me "The authentication key you have entered is invalid. Please check the key again for any missed or incorrect characters "
I checked and double checked. entered it in both upper and lowecase letters. Still it tells me it's wrong.

Why is this happening? and is there any way to get the account activated without having to buy a new copy?

The CD key should be valid. Still, it's probably a good idea to ensure that you aren't accidentally interposing O's and zeroes, and the like.

If you fear that the CD key is genuinely invalid for some reason, then you should probably return that copy of the game to the store you purchased it from, and exchange it for a new copy of the game. Also, please ensure that you are not using the 10-day guest pass. The CD key will most likely be located on the disc itself (or on the game manual in rare cases).

And if I do have to "Get a new copy" i will just demand a working one. only thing is.. since it's been unsealed and taken out of the box.. would they change it?

A copy of World of Warcraft that is missing a CD key, or has an invalid key would be considered 'defective'. I'm not certain that I've ever heard of a freshly opened box with an invalid CD key, though. This doesn't make such a thing impossible of course, just surpassingly rare.
