Character randomly deleted

So my roommate and I are trying to run a heroic on the same connection. For some reason he is lagging really bad whereas I'm not. I tell him to restart his computer to see if it fixes the lag. He restarts, and logs back in, and his main toon is missing. He's on a new computer and hasn't downloaded anything, so there shouldn't be any spyware. It happened so fast, that it wouldn't even make sense for someone to log into his account and delete the toon as fast as it happened.

Earlier today while I was at work, the same thing happened to a lvl 15 alt of his. He didn't think anything of it because the character was made just a few days ago. Does anyone know of this cause, or know anyone this has happened to? We plan on calling Blizzard tomorrow to try and fix it, but I would like to know what happened to prevent it again.

Characters don't generally delete themselves, and while I won't say it is impossible, if something like that were to occur it is exceedingly unlikely that it would happen to only one person. :)

If you can give me the name and realm of one of his characters I can look for signs of compromise, but if it is happening domestically, I may not be able to provide much information.

I'm afraid I don't see any evidence of a compromise. It could be an entirely isolated incident though I will certainly keep an eye out and see if the folks in our QA department have heard of this.

It never hurts to check your account/computer security though.

It looks like there is a petition open regarding the loss. A Game Master will be with your friend as quickly as they can and should be able to restore the character.
