Loot Babies and Etiquette

So I'm in a pretty plain jane, PUG ZF run today. The first blue that drops is a leather. Nobody can use it, so a groupie says he'll DE it. Perfect, rule established.

We proceed to kill one of the bosses and a pair of cloth gloves drop. Being better than what I have on, I click need. I wasn't prepared for the reaction.

Groupie 1 " Uhh..what are you doing?"
Me " I need those."
Groupie 2 " I NEEDED THOSE TOO!"
Me " Then why did you pass?"
Groupie 1 "You don't use the need button.....EVER!"

Look, make up whatever convoluted loot rules you want and I'll follow them, but other than that, why on earth would I not roll on a piece I need?

I don't know you guys. Why bother going through the formality of "Hey guys, can I need?" What, are you going to tell me no? Do you have master loot on? Too bad then, I'm rolling need anyway.

So the fellow clothie proceeds to quit the group, but not before referring to me as a "child" and "immature", saying I that I know what I did wrong.

Have I broken some implicit, unspoken WoW etiquette?

Have any interesting Loot Baby tales?

I never really understood the "pass on everything!" rule. As far as I'm concerned if you can't figure loot out within the timer length then you're doing something wrong. Plus if someone in a pug wants to pull the "oops I clicked the wrong button", or just outright ninja it, you're not completely out of an item, you still have a shot. Hopefully that doesn't happen too often though of course.

Anyway, yeah it's nice to ask first, but it's not required and you weren't wrong as far as I'm concerned. There are no standard loot rules unfortunately, although specific rules may be prevalent from realm to realm. Someone has a bad experience once, all of a sudden that loot method is completely broken and they've come up with some other flawless system... whatever. It's the job of the group leader to state some basic loot rules, or if someone is really concerned about the looting rules they can bring it up. Otherwise, the built in system works fine, and there's nothing wrong with using it.

Your post reeks of instigation though, so, when someone does something you think is ridiculous or unnecessary, just let it slide. Don't get in a huff about it, you might think you're infallible but sometimes you just have to say sorry and move on. Pick your battles. This wasn't an important one.
