Scrapping alchemy after 4 months: WORTHLESS!!

I am considering scrapping 4 months worth of work levelling up alchemy. I am completely and totally disappointed with every aspect of this worthless profession. I seldom to never use potions I make, they never sell for much (I often lose money trying to AH them several times), and worst of all, potions are neither fun nor cool. There is no excitement to mixing up a mana potion.

The only cool thing about alchemy--- at least I presumed it would be--- was transmutation. This was completely neutered and rendered utterly, completely, and in all ways worthless by the 24-hour cool down for transmuting A SINGLE BAR!!!! I can not even transmute different bars. What possible good is this? Armour recipies often require 8 or more bars for each item. Who wants to wait a week while I eke out a bar a day?

I could see a 24-hour cooldown on a stack of bars, or a 1-hour cooldown per bar. 24 hours per bar is absolutely pointless. I can not believe I wasted 4 months on this.

Maybe I should have researched this a little better, but it honestly never occurred to me that this level of stupidity and asanine restrictiveness was possible from Blizzard. Do these people realize we are PAYING for this game? Do they realize that we are paying to ENJOY playing this game? I briefly considered dropping this, my primary character, altogether; jewelcrafting with me paladin alt is so much more fun than tinkering with bottles of potions and transmuting a grand total of one bar a day.

There's a couple factors at work here that I think are leading to your frustration.

First, you're still a relatively low level in comparison to the rest of the playing population. What that means, especially for a profession that makes consumables, is very few people are going to go looking for what you have to make. At lower levels, and especially for players focused on leveling, the gains from buying and using elixirs isn't as obvious to most players as say... buying a ring. To solve this you really need to be up on the average level curve, where everyone else is, to gain the most from your profession.

I don't think the transmutes are a bad idea, but I think you may be placing a lot of importance on getting them done when I would recommend putting more importance on leveling and getting up to the rest of the crowd where they will be interested in your wares.

To answer your concern about transmute cooldowns, they have a cooldown so that the relatively common and cheaper materials aren't easily and abundantly transmuted to the more expensive. It's to keep them rare, more or less, and keep the economy surrounding those materials stable. If you were able to transmute as much as you wanted, or at least a ton of it, gold bars would be worth no more than iron bars.

"Specxmute" means Spec Transmute (for the illiterate ;) and refers to Alchemy specializations at 375. You can specialize at 375 Alchemy, and when transmuting you can "proc" and receive a greater return. Meaning, you have the mats to do one transmute, but may get two of the item once transmuted. It might be what you're looking for, but you need to get to at least level 68 to and have 350 Alchemy.

Lastly, you may not like Alchemy! There's some professions that people identify with, they love, and almost every character they have uses that profession. It goes the other way too, it may just be that you don't like the idea of Alchemy, and if that's the case, no leveling is really going to fix that.

My advice. Get to 70. Once there you can very easily drop Alchemy if you don't like it, and work on another profession by just buying the materials. It's easy enough to get the gold to do it, and it should only take a day or two to get to 325+ if you've saved enough. I've personally dropped professions and had them back up to 360+ within a couple days. It can be expensive, but if you don't want to buy everything being able to farm low level areas with a 70 is fairly easy.

Q u o t e:
Not to be rude or anything, but I feel a bit cheated... for months there have been plethoras of valid complaints in regards to alchemy on the forums, and this thread is certainly not a culmination of all that.

I'm not trying to pick fights or troll or anything, I'm just saying that there are some very logical concerns with alchemy right now. (It's very saddening how it went from one of the best professions to one of the worst in just a few short patches). Hopefully this blue post is an indication that they're looking into it and will address it next patch? = )

MAYBE!! No I don't know, I popped in to check the goings on today and thought I'd help the chap out. Is there a thread or two you think sum up some of the current concerns? I'm pretty sure I know what they are already but I wouldn't mind /popcorning and reading some.

It's about six pages though, I hope you have a niced sized tub of popcorn. = D

6 pages is nothin'! I read 6 pages while I sleep.

No... seriously, sometimes I read while I'm asleep. It creeps everyone out.

I'll take a look at it, thanks for the link.

Anyway, as an FYI the old mithril -> truesilver transmute is being changed to a 1 day cooldown. We're also going to be looking at the possibility of adding new metallic transmutes, but no promises.
