Question about the digital download

I'd like to know if, like in Starcraft 2, players who buy the retail box will have also the option to download the game.

In my case, I bought the retail box for SC2 and had the option to download the game from Bnet, then when the game was officially released, I only had to enter my activation code (CD-KEY) and I was able to play.

Someone may wonder why I would do this and the answer is that I live outside the U.S. so I won't have access to the retail box but a friend that does live in the U.S. will keep it for me until I visit him. I like collecting the game's boxes.

Yes, once you upgrade the account you should have access to the expansion information though the Account Management page. Though I believe once upgraded you should only need to log in and then out to initiate the download/update.

There is likely to be very little to download, Makko. Remember that this expansion is heralded by massive changes to Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms and all accounts will be receiving that information and have been for weeks leading up to it.

I can't say for certain how much of a download will be necessary, I'm sorry, but it is likely to be fairly slight.
