My Characters Are Gone

The characters are not gone, Arcticman.

On the Battle.net account there are 2 World of Warcraft accounts -- WOW1 and WOW2. It sounds as though you logged into WOW1 by mistake. Log into WOW2 and you should see your characters there. :)
