i'd really like a blue clarification on this

is it possible to upgrade a standard account (only vanilla WoW) to a WotLK account without also upgrading to burning crusade?

in other words is it possible to skip the BC upgrade and go straight to lich king?

You would have to upgrade to the Burning Crusade first before upgrading to Wrath of the Lich King, Rauss.
