What are Non Critical Updates?

I see this message alot when starting the World of Warcraft launcher.

"Applying non-critical updates. This will take some time."

I seem to get this at least once a week and it does take a bit for it to finish. I know I can play the game while its doing this, but I just wondered....

What IS it doing?

It's caching data and completing smaller updates, Mikewho. With future patches, you won't see it as often.
