Are proxy servers ok to use?

Just wondering if they're alright to use. Things like WoW tunnels, lowerping and smoothping.

I heard that since your ping might change to some different region your account will get locked down and you will need to change your password to undo that. Well, my friend has to go through that when he first started using one.

My main problem with that when unlocking your account, it asks your secret question? Last time I encountered my secret question, it was asking for my mother's maiden name. I promise you that I created this account back in 2004, the night after WoW was released and did not use that question. I would NEVER use that question because her maiden name is foreign and I only know how to pronounce it.

Heck, I don't even remember being asked to choose secret questions and answer them back in 2004.

As stated below, Goulashia, proxies are not against TOS however they are also not supported.
Q u o t e:
We understand that some people are using proxy or 'tunneling' services as a way to overcome latency issues; generally because their ISP may not be taking the best and fastest route possible to our servers.

Using these services is not now, nor has it ever, been a violation of our Terms of Use. Simply using a proxy is not enough to cause us to take action on your account. But! they're not officially supported either.

The reason why use of a proxy can be an issue is that the majority of organizations that abuse the game use proxies themselves. While we work to detect and stop these activities, we also work to prevent any ‘false positive’ results; but they do sometimes occur. Our false positive percentage is minuscule in relation to the number of accounts actually found in true violation of our policies, but they can happen. We work as fast as possible to review these cases and get our legitimate players back in the game.

If you do use, or want to use, a proxy/tunneling service, you can help prevent the likelihood of becoming a false positive by using the proxy service consistently.

We're continually improving our abilities to detect those that violate our policies, and with that we're continually improving our ability to more accurately identify (or rather, not identify) those that are using proxies legitimately.

Q u o t e:
No word about my secret question dilemma though? :s
My apologies, the secret question would be for your battle.net account not your WoW account. When your account was merged with battle.net you were given the opportunity to choose a new secret question/answer.

If you are not sure what the answer is, you may contact our billing and account services to retrieve it.

If I set up my account with an authenticator, will this be prevented?
An authenticator will not have any effect on your connection or the way a proxy works, so the answer is no.
