Every time I load up my iPod, my iTunes is telling me to update to 4.0.1 or something. I've put it off for quite a long time since my authenticator is on my iPod, but I really want to update soon. According to the message, everything on my iPod will be deleted. I want to preserve my mobile authenticator because I've seen posts about erasing the mobile app and trying to put it back on, but they're unable to. How can I go about doing this?

So glad you asked beforehand, Lesedi :)

This can indeed be an issue with mobiles, if the app gets wiped.

What you want to do in this case is first, take the authenticator off your account (very temporarily) through Account Management.

Immediately upgrade as you need to - then reinstall the authenticator and readd it to your account.

That will then use your new serial number (which reinstalling the app will give you) and everything should be good!
