There are a few generic steps you can try. The first and perhaps simplest is a full and proper reset of your user interface. Don't readd ANY addons prior to testing to see if this helps.
To do a full reset UI, you will want to save your addons in another spot if you wish to preserve them.

Then rename/delete or move your WTF, Cache and Interface folders while WoW is shutdown. Reboot your system.
Note, if you are running Vista make sure your permissions are set so it does not undo your changes.

Many players are finding they need to update their sound or video drivers, but that's an issue you may need tech support help with. I'm certainly not qualified to diagnose those.
Some find that turning down their graphics levels helps.
There is a special condition at the moment with 'cogwheels' There is a macro to help address those until it's resolved globally - in the first post of the sticky above on Hallow's End.
Those steps are helping most folks that are having just random disconnects or lag. Old addons - or even artifacts in those three folders that you delete in a reset UI can have a profound impact on performance.
