What I don't understand is why does my Inscriptionist have a recipe to make vanishing powder when it can be bought from reagent vendors?

The answer to your question is two-fold. We wanted it to be relatively simple for characters in the level 25-80 range to swap out glyphs, so we intentionally added Vanishing Powder to vendors at a relatively low cost. On the flip side, we recognized that it might feel a bit weird if scribes didn't have access to the recipe. The end result is that Vanishing Powder can be learned by scribes at skill level 75 and be made using low level materials.

With that said, we expect Dust of Disappearance, which is currently looking to sell for 12g50s (base) per dust from Inscription vendors, will establish the high-end value for the market, allowing scribes to sell the item competitively.

It should be noted that Vanishing Powder is the reagent used for the 1-80 glyphs. The higher-level glyphs will require Dust of Disapperance to remove them. That may not have been clear from Lylirra's post, but that's the way it's working on the Beta.

Correct!

At level 80 and below, players will use Vanishing Powder (Midnight Ink x1), which can either be purchased at Inscription vendors or be crafted by scribes with a skill level of at least 75. At level 81 and above, players will use Dust of Disappearance (Blackfallow Ink x2). Similar to Vanishing Powder, it will be available for purchase from Inscription vendors and can be crafted by scribes with a skill level of at least 475.

As with all content currently in beta, though, just keep in mind that mechanics surrounding Dust of Disappearance are subject to change. :)

edit: typos are rad

12.5g to swap glyphs? What a kick in the nuts.

While this may not assuage your concerns completely, I feel it's important to note here—since I was a bit spacey and didn't mention it previously—that this price (or whatever price we settle on) will be eligible for faction discounts.
