if he just took your gem and didn't give you anything back unless you paid 10g then that could possibly be scamming but since he got you a fresh uncut gem i don't think it is.

This is more a matter of miscommunication.

Certainly nothing smacks of a scam if he was willing to give you back exactly the same materials you supplied.

Should he have probably mentioned a min fee, sure.

Should you perhaps not undervalue your local craftsman who poured a whole lot of sweet, blood and equity into learning their craft.....probably.

I see absolutely no intention to scam in the scenario you presented.

Q u o t e:
Even when he tried trading me an uncut gem (which, by the way, he bought from the AH - smart fellow he is), he kept canceling the trade and running away.

Perhaps "scam" isn't exactly the right word for this. But it's certainly dumb. I suppose the best I can do is keep him /ignored and move on, after all.

As for undervaluing my local craftsmen, my tip was just fine for the service I required. Gems are easy and cheap to get now - and even if they weren't, regardless of how much sweat, blood, and equity he poured into learning his craft back in '0-friggin'-8, that still doesn't excuse him from being a jerk. I expected better from you, Orlyia.

Sorry, Reavara - I guess my craftsman roots are showing :)

It certainly doesn't hurt to initiate conversation regarding expected fees from your end either.

Typically in any kind of transaction, the less loose ends left to flap and have misunderstandings over....the better :)
