Recruit A Friend EXP

In the FAQ it says you should see a message saying "you gain Y recruit a friend exp" I am on a veteran account and my friend is listed as being a linked account.

We kill monsters, we are both at the exact same level (16 atm) and are grouped, but i see no message about "recruit a friend exp" it DOES seem like we are getting more exp than i'd expect , but im suspicious that we may not be getting the extra experience.

Is there a setting to show this "recruit a friend extra exp message'? What might be wrong?
