To download or not? that is the question.

If I decide to download Cataclysm instead of buying a hard copy, does it automatically get added to my list of battle.net games that I can download at any time? How large should I expect the game to be? Will I be able to download it right away, like midnight of release day, or the previous day? Would I pay less money for it because there is no middle man? These are few of the questions I'd like to have answered before I make this decision. Can I get a blue reply to this?

I would say picking it up is prob the best. That way you can install faster than if you waited for the bandwidth to DL it. If everyone DL it at the same time it could crash the servers so you would wait even longer. Who knows. But also if your system had a crash or you needed to reinstall hard copies are better.
