Direct Upgrade Question

My friend is on a trial account and she wants to upgrade to burning crusade so she can start a blood elf. I'm aware that she can purchase the key for classic wow through the direct upgrade option in account management. My question is, can she also purchase a key for burning crusade via the same method, or do you have to get that from a retail copy?
