Ghosts in wow?

Last night, a guild mate and I were going about random things when a mutual friend (60 Hunter) popped up in the friends notification. He hasn't played in about two years so we were happy to send hellos in /whisper. But we didn't get any responses. We though maybe his old account had been compromised so we watched his movement activity. We kept seeing that he was moving between Badlands and Searing Gorge over and over again. Occasionally, he would go to Burning Steppes. We decided to go look for him visually. We stayed at the zone lines and camped the Gryphon masters for like 30 minutes and we never saw him.

Being that he's a RL friend that I occasionally keep in touch with, I sent him an email last night and he responded this morning that he wasn't on.

So, maybe his account was hacked. But why the invisible rotation between the zones? Nothing around was getting killed, so it wasn't farming.

We're happy that we had kicked him from our joint bank guild when he quit a while back.

But...could it have been a ghost of a long dead character?

It does indeed sound as if your friends account was compromised, Parts. I would suggest that he fills out the Account Recovery Form so that the situation may be investigated: (http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=26859148968&sid=1).
