Are Keyboard Macros illegal in WoW?

My keyboard died out the other night, and I went out and bought a Razer Lycosa. Great keyboard. Anyway, the drivers that come with it allow macroing, letting one key press enable multiple keys, with delays and such. The delays and program running I'm not going to go into, that's pretty damn close to a bot and I wouldn't risk it. But I'm curious, is it punishable to simply use one key to press multiple keys, like pressing 5 will also press 1, 2, 3, and 4 simultaneously?

The real question at hand here is:

Does it automate play for you? Can you get up, walk away, and have your character still be playing? Or does it still require you to be at the helm, keeping control of your character?

In the majority of cases, I generally stick with the idea that if you have to ask, you probably shouldn't do it. But in the realm of games where macros can play such a big part of the game, it's worth taking a closer look.

For your exact question:

I would err on the side of no in this situation, as you could automate a rotation in this manner, and that's pretty sketchy. Rule of thumb: one button press, one action.
