When trolling becomes harassment and worse

So I am your average Gm of a social raiding guild, that before I helped rebuild I was in a previous guild and met an individual in that guild. Sneezjelly.. (its not his name) was not someone I thought much of at the time nor dealt with much. I was only in the guild for 6 days. I left and formed my guild.. And through, luck, work, and happenstance watched my social guild grow to nearly 300 members. At this time Sneezejelly formed a hardcore raiding guild. I was so focused on my guild I didn't really worry about this guild because their goals and our goals vastly differed. We did raid our guild and we began to make progress slowly... and unfortunately.. Summer months came and we stagnated with the lost of raiders.
While this was going on.. Sneezjellies guild had progressed to the point that they were a 60+ force and that had gotten to 25man sindy HM.. and had hit a wall. This was when he decided to focus on brandishing my guild as a terrible guild. Despite the fact we were not competing. at all. He convinced a few healers to wipe us on Lk in 10man and then leave the guild to join his. He conspired with his guilders to get alts into the guild to sow dissent and drama. He would have people join a pug 25man and as soon as there was difficulty.. He would have them scream on vent.. curse out folks. It got to the point that hosting a 25man pug required the investigative efforts of a private eye.
Then he partnered with the most insane troll on the server.. They got in the guild and befriended and were able to get my personal phone number. During all this I had reported him for harassment and still he was playing the game. After they got my number.. They posted it in trade.. I received nasty calls in the middle of the night. They posted the number on our realm forum as well. It was at this time that finally my patience had reached a breaking point.. And I decided I would do something stupid.. I would stoop to his level. Make an alt.. Get into his guild and break-it from within. Then on the day of my great.. plan.. I was contacted by someone I had never talked to before.. a member of his guild.. now an ex-guilder. They shared with me heir personal story of real-life betrayal. The Gm Sneezjelly knew this members gf in the real world.. and decided to try and take advantage of an apparent past time when they had temporary separation. He told his guilders Gf a sordid tale of infidelity. An apparent evil attempt to end their relationship.
It failed and they left his guild. And then they contacted me.. This Gm was a drug addict who lived at home with parents.. and he had a part-time job which allowed him so much free time.. He was able to focus his efforts on attempting to torture myself and my guilders.

I realized my anger had nearly lead me down a dark path and I had almost fallen into acting just as bad as he is. Fate had saved me from making a terrible mistake. What I am really disappointed in is that the harassment policies that blizzard has are not followed up on faster. That their rules are not easier to look up. And that the whole volcano penalty system has some serious flaws which allow individuals like him to walk away scott-free.

So the next time you have someone gen enraged to the point they blow your cool.. think of my story.. and remember your free time and privacy is important .. but don't lose it in order to focus on beating a troll.

Q u o t e:
I thought this was an appropriate discussion for general chat....odd choice to move it here.

Not really, this is sort of our kind of neck of the woods.

As for the situation at hand, Diresin, I'm very happy that you stood up for yourself and chose to take the right path, one without, as you said, stooping to the level of those who were harassing you in the first place. Any harassment is investigated and actioned, and ongoing harassment in particular is something we take very seriously. It can be a huge damper on your enjoyment of the game, and to put it bluntly, it's just not a fun situation.

Any out of game harassment though, as others have mentioned, should absolutely be taken up with your local authorities. If you ever feel threatened or unsafe, let your law enforcement know. It's their job to serve and protect, and it's our Game Masters to do so similarly for events that transpire within World of Warcraft. We will always cooperate with the authorities should they need any information from us, but those requests must come from some type of government official.

If these events continue to transpire, place the individual(s) on ignore, and submit a petition. Never respond and never sink to their level, and they might stop being a problem sooner than you would expect. >^_~<
