If he can recall the account name and identify himself as the original registered user of the account our Billing and Account Services department may be able to help.
From what you have said it sounds like the account may have been compromised after your friend stopped playing. I'm not entirely certain what can be done if that is the case as restoration very much depends on what information can be verified. Beyond a fairly narrow window of time we may not be able to confirm malicious intent. They can let your friend know though. Have him give them a call during business hours.
