Random whispers about in-game items

Ever since I reached Northrend, I've received several whispers that are different from the usual scams. A couple have been from level 1 trolls in Durotar -- the first was right after my initial arrival to Dalaran, and they claimed to be a "customer rep for the server," while the second came while I was off hunting in Nagrand. Both were reported and ignored, with a summary of the incident submitted in a ticket for extra measure. (The second just said "hi," and when I shift-clicked the name and saw they were level 1 in Durotar, I didn't even bother to talk to them.)

However, today a level 80 belf in Org sent me a random whisper while I was questing in Grizzly Hills, asking if I was interested in a blue bow, and after some thought, I remembered getting random requests like that a few other times after I started leveling in Northrend.

Those level 1's are probably from a new toon on a compromised account, and contacted me somehow or other, but what about the toons who appear to be legitimate players? Should I be reporting those incidents as well? I keep Track Humanoids on and the minimap zoomed out, so it's not like they were nearby and happened to find a drop I might buy from them. They've always been in a completely different part of the world, so it kinda looks like they also just got hold of someone's account and are selling off everything.

I'm also bothered that they'd have a way to find some random hunter elsewhere in the game, so they can target other players with gear we'd actually need (as opposed to asking me if I wanted some tank or caster gear). My guess is, it's just from some research of the Armory or something like that.

Absolutely, Jakjak. As you noted these high level characters are likely on compromised accounts. It is likely that the registered user isn't aware that the account has been compromised. By using the Report Spam feature or otherwise reporting the character that can help get the account locked or closed to avoid further damage and will likely serve to notify the registered user that something is up on the account.

Even though the account may be closed as a result of the activities on it those penalties are usually overturned once it is verified that the account was compromised at the time of the violations.

So please, report these when you find them.
