It sounds like he may have accidentally created two accounts. Ask him if he sees WOW1 and WOW2 on his Battle.net account. Or if you both used the same computer to set it up, if you didn't sign out of battle.net before he clicked on the link, it may have put the trial on your Battle.net account.
Either way, it can be fixed. He just needs to contact Billing.
