Lich king content not working?

When i first starting playing wow it was about 3 months ago. i went to battle.net to purchase the game. i bought wrath of the lich king. i did not purchase burning crusades until later on after i noticed that i was unable to make a death knight at level 55, or go to northrend. i thought that having burning crusades would alow me to use lich king content but it still will not allow me to create a death knight or go to northrend? i need help.

I show this account does have Burning Crusade - but not yet upgraded to Wrath of the Lich King.

Each expansion is separate and must be done in order, you can't just skip one.
