Duping in Wow

So I was reading the TCG forums and came across this post:

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=26726015792&sid=1

To avoid confusion I think blues need to give us a response on how to deal with this. So I have a few questions I personally would like answered.

1. Is this a problem, has duping actually occurred?

2. Is there a way to tell an item is duped, so we don't buy one of these?

3. If we get sold a duped item, what is Blizzard's reaction going to be? From what this thread indicates, the buyer loses the item and doesn't get reimbursed.

I think this is all very serious, because it calls into question every single transaction we do in wow. If this problem is real and grows, it can threaten the whole in game economy.

No.

As I stated in the thread you linked if you receive an item that was gained illicitly the item will likely be removed as part of our investigation. If we are able to we will restore what you traded for it. Please note that no restoration is ever guaranteed, even in this case, but if we can verify that your trade was, for all intents, made legitimately we will do what we can.

So in theory he could have farmed that bad boy all day long and become a hundredaire by the end of the day! In closing, he eventually had his GM ticket responded to and the GM got rid of the offending dagger once and for all.

Actually I believe you both misunderstood what was likely happening in this case. The quest your friend was doing was a repeatable one for reputation in which the reward was a Dusksteel Throwing Knife. You get one each time you turn in the quest. Due to the nature of the item you should only be able to hold one of them at a time. Each time your friend turned in the quest it wanted to award them the knife, but they couldn't hold it, because it was unique. The knife likely ended up in their overflow inventory, so when they sold, deleted or disenchanted the knife and logged out and back the next one in the overflow appeared in their inventory.

It should also be noted that the petition was abandoned before it was addressed so your friend might have figured out what was happening.

I hope that clarifies that. :)

And please read the thread, it has been well established that the OP is referring to the duping of items. He perpetuating a rumor that simply isn't possible. It needs to stops before more people see these posts and continue to post it as fact.

I am hesitant to say that anything is not possible, I have seen some strange things over the years. So though I understand the danger that you are wary of, that such a rumour can create, to say that it is simply not possible isn't entirely accurate. I could, the game a bunch of pixels and data, and that doesn't always operate the way you assume it will. :)
