Like, say I buy a copy of Cata in NZ, and send it to one of my US friends as a gift. Would they still be able to use the key to upgrade their account, or are the regions incompatible?

As long as the copy you purchase is a North American, your friend should be able to use it.
There’s a couple way’s you can check if it’s a North American copy or European:
- Check the back of the box. A European box will typically have EU contact information, while the North American will have NA contact information.
- The authentication key will have the region; look for ‘NA retail authentication key’.
