Yes, you'll be able to set up your son's account on your Battle.net account. As the registered user on the account you are able to permit one minor child, that you are the parent or legal guardian of, to access the account.
You'll be able to transfer between the accounts on the same Battle.net account. You can also set up a Battle.net account in your name on your son's behalf. If you do it that way you may still transfer between accounts, as they are both registered to you, but you will need to wait 30 days to transfer a character from the new Battle.net account to an existing Battle.net account.
Though that may prove to be a mild inconvenience it may help you manage your son's game time as you can set up Parental Controls on his Battle.net account.
From what I can see you wish to use the Recruit a Friend promotion and upgrade almost immediately using a purchased Battlechest and you want to know how to go about it so avoid complications.
To do this successfully, first decide how you want to set up the account. If you want to have a separate Battle.net account for your son to use or you want it merged into your current Battle.net account. Once you have done that log into your Battle.net account, select your World of Warcraft. Once there select Referrals and Rewards and finally Recruit a Friend then follow the directions.
You are able to send yourself a Recruit a Friend invitation so just send it to yourself. Once you receive it, make sure you are logged into the Battle.net account you want the new Recruit a Friend trial on and then click the link in the e-mail. That should automatically add the Recruit a Friend trial account to that Battle.net account.
Once you do that, if you wish to upgrade immediately, select the new Recruit a Friend trial account. Once there, on the right hand side there should be several options. The one you want, since you purchased a retail copy of the game is,
Enter CD Key.
You'll be taken to a page where you will have the option to Activate a Game Key or Purchase a Digital Game. You'll want to enter your CD Key for your Standard World of Warcraft version. From there just follow the same steps and add the Burning Crusade code and eventually the Wrath of the Lich King code.
