Unfortunately purchases, such as an online upgrade, have stricter security protocols so it is possible that either your friend's bank or our system is unable to allow the transaction to proceed.
The only recommendation that I have is to make sure that the account information on the account is up to date, credit card billing information is correct, etc. . . .
If your friend continues to have an issue upgrading he'll need to either pick up a retail copy of the game or he may be able to contact our Billing and Account Services department directly. They may be able to manually process the purchase.
