Am I breaking TOS in anyway in this incident?

Okay so I just happened to compare achievements with this one individual and noticed that he had acquired an amount of -130,000,000. I assumed that he was a gold seller and so I thought hey, maybe I'd give this guy a hard time. I hate gold sellers, and gold buyers....ruins the game. Anyway I sent him a message saying that "I have evidence that you have been selling gold for real money". He then responded by asking me how much I wanted to keep quiet...... didn't expect that. Anyway I said I'd take 5000G. After this I found out that I had been reported and accused of player extortion :( I did apologize quite well in fact, but it looks like the individual is still going through with the petition. I am wondering If I could be penalized for what happened in the situation given the context, and the fact that he offered to pay.

Extortion? To not report someone for allegedly being a gold seller? No.

I'm not certain why you would taunt someone else with an accusation you truly don't have evidence of except for a display that very well could be incorrect but I don't see how such behavior would be considered harassment unless you continued beyond your initial communication.

If you believe someone is violating our Terms of Use, Genies, please just report it. We'll be happy to look into it. By confronting someone else you run the risk of creating a harassment situation where one wouldn't have been otherwise. :)

So, if I may Vrak, what would happen if the accused gold seller DID give the OP 5,000 gold. Assuming that it wasn't stolen gold, this is a perfectly ToU-legal way of making money?

Hypothetically speaking, Sunlyght, if someone gave another person gold that was not tainted in any way for really no reason except they happened to click accept in the trade window... I'm not certain what rules would be broken.

In this case the odds are the person decided to mess with the OP for attempting to mess with them. Since it is unlikely they were a gold seller they had nothing go fear in being accused.

Now Blackmail/Extortion would be a bit difficult to do in this regard and even if you somehow were able to communicate with someone who did participate in these illicit activities, do you believe that anything they gave you would be legitimate?

Beyond that, we would take a dim view of someone randomly contacting and harassing players hoping to find someone who may be doing something against our policies and/or who may not understand how our reporting system works and think that we don't actually check an accusation before we take action.

Always keep in mind what I feel is the most important of all our policies.

(iii) Anything that Blizzard considers contrary to the "essence" of the Game.

Try to be a decent human being, play the game fairly, and you should never have an issue.

thats great and all- but ive reported a number of people on my server that are using auction toons that are logged in 24hrs a day and automatically list auctions to undercut everyone. one of them shows over 6000g average made per day in his statistics, 50K auctions posted. ive reported them 3 or 4 times on multiple toons, as have others that sell goods in the same markets (i mailed them and we talked about the bots)

nothing has happened whatsoever. i just get the "thank you for reporting this, we take this thing very seriously. we will be glad to investigate it" message. months later, these bots are still around. the gem and enchanting markets are severely effected as a result.

You have reported people that you believe to be using automation software to do this, Tygramook, that doesn't necessarily mean that you are correct in your assumptions. Only that you notice individual characters on that seem to be doing something that may be against our policies.

We appreciate the reports and will continue to look into those that you suspect of violating our Terms of Use, Tygramook, and we will take appropriate actions regarding all violations that are found, but in many cases what you think you see is not always what is.
