Digital and CD game copies

My friend gave me his WoW with expansions, on disks. But, i can't download the first one, because of chips on the bottom (i can see through them, so part of the data of the game is gone). So, i bought the digital copy of classic WoW. My problem is that i can't download the expansions on disk with the digital copy, it says client error, or something like that. i would just like to know if it's actually possible to mix digital with disk copies. If so, i won't have to use up all my money for next expansions... as im also paying for a subscription.

Each expansion has a fee, I think you are mistaking installing the software - which is essentially free, with upgrading your license, which is not.

Using someone else's disks or downloading will get you the software - but it won't upgrade your account.
