Mailing heirlooms

My main is a 80 alliance and i want to start a horde char. I remember reading somewhere that BOA items can be mailed to any char, even horde/alliance, as long as its on your realm & account. Problem is, the mail system will not let you send mail to a horde if you are alliance, so how can this be possible?

(and no I do not wish to create a lv 1, mail them the boa stuff and pay to change them to horde)

Indeed, as stated above this is a fairly recent change.

On the same realm - same account, Heirloom items can be mailed cross-faction. Nothing else can be in the email, but heirlooms should work.
