These phishing emails are typically sent as a result of signing up for websites, services, and contests using the email address, Duart. Have you joined any World of Warcraft or video game related web sites using the email address that receives the most spam? One of our players performed a pretty ingenious study where he signed up for multiple websites using brand-new, unique email addresses and then monitored the amount of spam that was incoming. The results were quite staggering; some websites resulted in several spam messages sent daily whereas emails addresses used solely to sign up for the World of Warcraft and Battle.net received none.
As much as we'd love to eliminate phishing emails, it is battle much to large for just one company. Phishing is an epidemic that affects far more than just the World of Warcraft and video games, Duart. Nevertheless, we'll do whatever we can to thwart these attempts. Our Hacks team will investigate the emails forwarded to them in an effort to shut down malicious websites, notify email providers, and determine whether or not we should adjust messaging.
The absolute best way to prevent phishing scams is to browse responsibly, and keep your email address as private as possible. The more you use your email address to sign up for websites, contests, and services, the more likely it becomes that you'll receive these malicious emails.
