Account Retrieval

I took a long break from World of Warcraft. While I was gone, the account log-in had changed from an account name, to a battle.net associated email address. Since I had a cancelled account through this transition, is it still possible to reactive the old account? I have the account name and password. I'm wondering if I can merge a cancelled account with a battle.net account and reactivate it.
