Anonymity is sometimes seen as part of the appeal of virtual worlds, but Activision Blizzard is about to curb user anonymity in one facet of its World of Warcraft MMO. The company is implementing a Real ID system in its Battle.net online service that will require users paying for subscriptions through credit cards to display the name that appears on that card whenever posting on the company's official forums. Users who pay for their subscriptions through time cards, or who use Battle.net to play Starcraft II and Diablo III, will be able to enter pseudonyms.
