How to use real ID?

can I get a step by step guide on how to add a friend as a real ID friend? (as opposed to just adding a single character to my friends list on a single server)

It looks like you don't have Real ID enabled in your Parental Controls, Barticus. That may be responsible for the message you are receiving.
