Guild Lottery? Legal?

Stupid Question I know. But I have seen it done inside other Guilds. Then last night at my Officer Meeting. I brought up the Idea of a Guild Lottery, to put Gold in someone's Pocket, and increase Guild Funds to help pay for Free Repairs. But then one of my Officer's said, "Guild Lottery's may be illegal." and well I am here to make sure, as long as I do not Advertise it in Recruitment, or anywhere for that matter that we have a Guild Lottery. Is it Legal? As long as no one can get banned over it, and a BLIZZARD POSTER says yes if you do it "Right" it is legal.

While in-game gambling like the kind you've described is permitted, Deathplea, advertisement of the associated casino, raffle, or lottery (et al) within the game or on the official forums is not. You can learn more about this policy here: http://us.blizzard.com/support/article/27048

Please note that while in-game gambling is not specifically supported, if it is evident you are purposefully attempting to scam your fellow players, the Game Master department is likely to intervene.

Hope this helps!

By your explanation, simply asking "What's up with these in-game lotteries?" in gchat can get me banned.

While it's unlikely that one would be banned outright for discussing in-game gambling in guild chat, if another player in the guild were to report the discussion to In-Game Support, it would be subject to review under our policies. It all depends on context.

We purposefully designed our policy regarding in-game gambling based on player opinion and feedback. Some players want to have the opportunity to gamble in-game privately, and that's okay by us. Other players, those who do not want to gamble in-game (privately or not), don't want to see advertisements or discussion related to said activity, and we respect that. Therefore, we permit the practice, but disallow advertisement or announcement thereof in public chat channels and the official forums. Guild chat is a public chat channel, so using your example, as I noted, the chat would be subject to review.

Q u o t e:
I thought guild chat counted as a private channel? In the fact that you have to join the guild in order to see it?

Private chat channels are player-created. Guild chat is still a public chat channel, but we do provide discussions therein some lenience, as joining the guild is required to access the channel.
