I have heard it stated that it be to our disadvanatage to downgrade armor come expansion but haven't heard anything about the mechanics that will make it so as of yet. Right now with no mechanical reason not to as an enhancement shaman come expansion rogue leather is looking a lot more appealing than gear that I have to share with hunters for one big reason expertise. Leather more commonly will have expertise on it than mail simply because the mail is shared with hunters who have no use at all for expertise. Other than that all the same stats are there on the leather that would be on the mail plus the much needed expertise.

It seems much more to my advantage to put the leather on if it has all the stats I need and the mail will rarely if ever have expertise on it. Even if the mail does end up having enough expertise on it what really makes the leather any less appealing to me if it shows a stat upgrade other than having to hope a rogue or druid doesn't need it?

I would really like some preview from blizzard to show how armor class downgrades will be bad come expansion.

You will get a stat bonus of some kind if you wear "your" armor. You can still wear cloth, mail or leather of a lower armor type if it's a big upgrade, especially if it would get sharded anyway. But the days of Holy paladins in cloth or warrior wearing leather are probably behind us.
