The hour way until auction payouts

This isn't a complaint - I'm just curious as to why we wait an hour to get our auction payouts. I hear this is to protect against gold selling or something, but I can't figure out how an hour wait would stop that.

It gives us time to investigate and react to AH sales, should we deem them needing of a closer look.
