Q u o t e:
its very disturbing/upsetting to see how many "Unauthorize authenticator removal" posts there are...
but in on a more serious/ urgent note... I would like to get a status update on where my account stands on possible reimbursement after being hacked. Anything blue guys?
More than happy to confirm you do have an investigation in queue, Oghoric.
At the moment it is 4 days, 17 hours old and we are running a bit on the high side of 10 days in that queue at the moment, so it will be a few days.
As to the other posters comments about HOW this can happen, there are certainly high-risk behaviors.
Sharing Accounts
Buying gold/powerleveling
Investigating sites of goldsellers on the web (and getting infected)
Using multiple systems that others have access to (Internet cafes, school, work, friends house)
Downloading software without proper scanning (especially 'free' software)
Any of those things would be high-risk and most folks know to avoid them.
Then there is lower-risk behaviors.
Using the same password/ID multiple places, especially websites
Not updating and scanning regularly
Not scanning with appropriate or sufficient scanners to cover all the potential threats.
Not updating other programs, Word, OS, Flash, etc.
Using a high-profile email (i.e., public places) for your WoW account.
Not verifying all emails as to true sender and falling victim to a phish.
This certainly isn't a complete list, but I think you get the idea.
Now, there are also things like zero-day vulnerabilities that even if you are the most tech savvy and vigilant person in the world may get you. While high-risk behaviors certainly make you a more likely target anyone with a computer hooked to the outside world is at risk.
If you have an internet connection, YOU ARE AT RISK.
Security of your system is simply not something we can help. Doesn't mean you've done anything 'wrong', but it is a player's responsibility to keep their systems just as secure as possible.
One reason the authenticator was developed was to give our players another layer of defense. It is not and was never meant to be a substitute for good security habits.
Our Specialists are getting to everyone's investigations just as quickly as possible. These things tend to go in cycles. Before a holiday, summer - we do tend to see spikes. That doesn't mean there are 'more' necessarily, just a high part of the curve.
