Can't we go back to the TBC PvP system?

Okay, so I've been gone for WoW for 6 months and am catching up on all the new information for Cataclysm, and count me as one who has lost all enthusiasm for rated BG's.

What was so wrong with PvP during TBC? In TBC you had regular BG's and then you had the introduction of the Arena. Those who wanted the top end gear did Arena and that was the only way to get the cutting edge best gear. If all you wanted to do was play BG's you could do that and get gear that was 2 (?) seasons behind the gear those that played Arena were receiving. However, the gear you could get (including weapons) was good enough that you could at least be competitive in world PvP or in BGs. What was so wrong with this system? It rewarded the most skilled players of Arena by allowing them to have the best of the best, but at the same time allowed the less skilled a chance to earn decent gear to at least have some kind of chance during BG's?

With Cataclysm, what is the average player supposed to do for fun while PvPing? I'll be the first to admit I'm not an awesome PvPer and will never achieve ratings required in the Arena to get the top end gear and I'm okay with that. I was always happy knowing I could jump into BG's and get "good enough" gear to have some fun, help achieve our objectives and be competitive. Also, I'm like a lot of players in WoW that has limited time and a very erratic play schedule so raiding and organizing times to play don't work for me. Again, I'm fine with that and there was always BG's I could pop in at my discretion and play as much as I could and log off. It's not that I'm anti-social or not willing to play with others, but I can't always committ a set amount of time to play so it's not fair to others who may be counting on me.

Now it sounds as if I won't be able to play BG's, or if I solo queue, it will likely be against a pre-made that will just repeatedly stomp the PuG I'm in and I can't really play Arena, at least not competitively, so what's left for the many players like myself? Are there going to be non-rated BG's? Even so, it will go back to like how it was in vanilla WoW, where people like me will log in to a non-rated BG and face all the people with Arena/Rated BG gear and just get stomped.

I am very concerned with this and hope Blizzard is thinking of the many players in this situation.

We keep a lot of players in mind when designing these types of things which is why we want to make it easily accessible. The guild you are listed in has a rather large number of people and the guild leveling/achievement system will help support this. Being in a guild like this, it likely won't be difficult to find a few guildies to put together a team and hop in the rated BG queue. There will still be non-rated BGs much like they are today if that suits you better.

There likely won't be detriments for losing rated BG games, but the increase of rating for winning. (At least when you first get going in them). Yes, you need to win to get rewards. Rated BGs aren't meant to be a way to just casually and aimlessly get the best PvP gear in the game, but to reward those who compete (and win) on the grand scale of battlegrounds.

Done.

A bunch of folks would like a change in this mentality since tradechat pugs are absolutely awful; gearscore and achievements will be mandated by groups (not to mention rating); and the rating system itself should sort out any AFK issues.

If you do not want a gearscore/achievement mandated group, why not form your own? Have you thought about joining a larger guild or making friends with another guild or two that is larger?

This is what I need cleared up. Will people, or will they not be able to create a different raid group fill with completely different players each time they enter a rated BG?

This was just mentioned above, but I'll reiterate just for the sake of it. You need to be in a full group to join the rated BG queue. The team can change every week, between every match, whenever you like. The rating you receive is personal and not team-based so it doesn't matter who else is in the group.

Rated BGs by Ghostcrawler:

Rated battlegrounds are designed to give you the exact same type of gear that you can earn through doing arenas but through a battleground environment. The idea is that you don’t need a permanent team as you do in arenas, but you do need a premade team.

If the rated BG that week was WSG; then you just need to queue with 9 other people. You could change out those people for each match since you earn rating on an individual basis.

The rating gate (since you don't ever lose rating) will basically be your ability to get 9, 14, or 24 other people who want to play with you. Shouldn't be a huge issue when everybody first gets to 85 but a few months in you'll see stuff like you do today with ToC raids (5700+ gearscore mandated)
