Authenticator Code?

Greetings, I've not played WoW now since the end of November, and was interested in playing again. When I go to log in to my account management, I'm asked to enter an eight digit Authenticator Code that I was never asked to before. Would anyone be able to help me out with what this may be?

That would tend to indicate a compromised account, Jokerette.

You have to have a password and ID to add on of those, so someone got your information.

The good news (if you can find a bright spot here), this isn't very old, so chances of a good recovery are much better.

You first need to find out how they got your information. If the security breach isn't located, the chances of this happening again are MUCH higher.

If you go over the information below, it should provide some useful information. You'll want to make sure first of your security, then contact Billing on this to get back into control of the account.

---------------------

If an account has been merged to a Battle.net, or if an email has been changed, or an authenticator added to the account (not the player's own) one of your first stops is going to be Billing. They need to get those sorted out first so the rest of the processes can continue.

Players in Argentina should call 0800-333-0778
All other international players should call: (949) 955-0283

Now, it's very very important to figure out where the security breach occurred. If they CAN get back in, they WILL be back. That, unfortunately, you can count on.

These two stickies should prove helpful.

You may also want to look into getting an authenticator for your account. It's no substitute for good security habits, but it will help keep them out of your WoW account.

Yeah, that is odd. They've also been playing my mage too. Also got an achievement on the third. Less work for me when I get my account back :P

Since you recently came back, and this recently happened, I'd be very suspicious of a current infection on your system. Also remember, any machine you've used even to log into these forums needs to be suspect.

Actually, this brings me to a question now that I think about it...if they took the time to add an authenticator recently, why would they not have changed the password on my account? After all, I am logged into it?

They toss on an authenticator just to slow you down in recovery some. That's not uncommon anymore.

The forums here do not require that.

But to add an authenticator, they came by your password and ID so finding out how someone got that information is very important.

Adding your own authenticator is something I encourage everyone to do, it's just an added layer of security and peace of mind that cannot be beat.

Just to warn you, the phone number is almost impossible to call. I tried for weeks everyday and never got through. The fastest way was to email billing instead. They were very quick and then I went and bought my own authenticator to keep other people from doing that to me again.

Getting into the queue is the only challenge, and that frees up on a constant basis.

If you hit redial until you get into the hold queue, that seems to be the best method.
