I just got this e-mail:

"world of warcraft: Cataclysm Beta Test Invitation!

Get those opt-ins ready for the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm closed beta! The sundering of Azeroth is nigh, and you don’t want to be left out in the cold of Northrend when you could be enjoying the sun-drenched beaches on the goblin isle of Kezan. To ensure you’re opted-in and eligible as a potential candidate, you’ll need a World of Warcraft license attached to your Battle.net account, have your current system specifications uploaded to the Battle.net Beta Profile Settings page, and have expressed interest through the franchise-specific check boxes.

Get the Installer - Log in to your Battle.net account:

** IMPORTANT ** To avoid graphical bugs and other technical issues, please ensure your video card drivers are up-to-date.

Enjoy the game!

?2010 Blizzard Entertainment, Inc."

It has good grammar and it looks authentic. Phish? The ? before 2010 and world of warcraft lowercase leaves me to believe so.

Eilethalua and Pailamaha gave you some excellent advice, Catclawz. The email you received was most definitely malicious and pointed you to a website that was not run by Blizzard Entertainment. I'm guessing the website itself would probably have prompted you to "log in" and, as a result, encouraged you give out your account name and password. Your caution was well served, sir. :)

If you're interested, you can learn more about how to identify, report, and possibly even phishing emails here:

In the meantime, if you're willing to forward on that email to [email protected] that would be greatly appreciated.

Please do not necro posts, Eesh.

The only real way to tell a phish is to pop open the internal routing headers of an email and determine the true sender.

Even otherwise 'real' emails can be co-opted by a phisher, links doctored and redirected.

It may be a challenge to find, but every email program should be able to show you the routing information.
